The Tale of the Birthstones - February in Amethyst


Starting this month, we will be writing a wide range and aspect of interesting articles. Our starting point is "Birthstones". The articles will cover the home decor, cooking techniques, clothing and accessories and mixed art media that is related somehow with the birthstones... Hope to see you all every week...

Birthstones are gemstones that are associated with each month.

The Modern Birthstone List contains the official birthstone list from the American National Association of Jewelers, Jewelers of America. These gemstones were officially adopted in 1912. In the US, this is the accepted list.

Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February and the traditional anniversary gemstone for the sixth of marriage. Once considered more valuable than diamonds, this member of the quartz member occurs naturally as crystals within rocks.

Mystical Powers of the birthstone: The gift of Amethyst is symbolic of protection and the power to overcome difficulty. It is said to strengthen the bond in a love relationship, so it is an ideal anniversary or engagement gem. Whether or not Amethyst holds such power, it's stunning beauty will certainly make anyone who wears it feel like royalty!

Main sources of Amethyst: Brazil and Zambia. It is also found in Uruguay, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mexico and the US State of Arizona.

Interesting Facts: One of the largest cut amethysts in the world is 343 carats and is housed at the National History Museum in London. Very dark stones are sometimes heated to enhance color.
