Mystical Powers of the birthstone: Sapphires were once believed to be protection against snakes. It was said that if poisonous reptiles and spiders were placed in a jar containing the stone, the creatures would immediately die. The French of the 13th century believed that sapphire transformed stupidity to wisdom, and irritability to good temper.

Main sources of Aquamarine: Sapphire is mined in Australia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Other producers are Burma, Kampuchea, Kenya and Tanzania.

Interesting Facts: The Sapphire is second only to the Diamond in hardness, making it a durable gemstone for setting into jewelry. As nourishing to the soul as gazing up at the sky on a summer day, this brilliant blue gemstone is truly a heavenly choice!

Peridots Egyptian Cuisine

Egyptian cuisine is one of the most interesting cuisines in the world. While I was finishing my culinary degree at Johnson & Wales, we learned the intricacies of the cuisines from all over the world. Egypt's cuisine was the one of the most interesting. In the western world, we find new techniques to add flavor and style to food and cooking style, but not in Egypt. There, it is all original, traditional foods, which stand the test of time.

Egyptian dishes are simple and hearty, mostly made with naturally ripened fruits and vegetables and seasoned with fresh spices. The food in the south of Egypt is closely linked to North African cuisine, so it is zestier than that food found in the north; contrary to popular belief, neither region is especially hot.

Main sources of Peridots: Peridot comes from the ancient source of Zebirget Island in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. Today, peridot is mined in Burma, Norway, Brazil, Australia, Hawaii, the Congo, and in Arizona.
Interesting Facts: It is not certain where the word ,peridot, derived from originally. It is either from the French word peritot which means unclear or from the Arabic word faridat which means gem. In either case, peridot has been mined as a gemstone for an estimated four thousand years.

Thai cuisine has been greatly accelerating, especially over the past few years. A lot of outside influences have contributed to the new flavors and tastes. Interestingly enough, modern kitchenware has also added to improved ideas and techniques of cooking fine Thai food. Today, good Thai food can be more creative than in the earlier years, when it was sort of two dimensional. Thai cooking evolved, according to natural influences from other countries, such as China and European countries. Thai folks enjoy a Chinese quick-frying method as well as a large choice of stir-frying entries in their kitchens.

While attending Johnson & Wales University culinary arts, I came to appreciate Japanese cuisine and all its glory. Japanese food became one of my favorite comfort foods and a weekly staple in my house. I enjoyed learning about the great variety of Japanese dishes, especially Sushi. Of course, Sushi is the one of the most popular foods in the modern world. People from all walks of life crave it, like they crave clean drinking water. It is simple, yet divine. Diamond - South African Cuisine

South African cuisine includes many delightful varieties of foods. This great cuisine uses spices from many different influences, outside of its home region. South Africa was characterized by a wide variety of wild plants, game, fruits and nuts. Later, the Europeans brought their cooking styles with them and this affected South African cuisine. Although the cuisine of South Africa is known as Cape Dutch, it was the slaves, imported from Bengal, Malaysia and Java, who influenced the food of South Africa more than anyone else. One of the main dish is know as Bobotie, this delicious recipe is slightly sweet, spiced minced dish.

March's birthstone is a gemstone known as Aquamarine . This beautiful birthstone means "water of the sea". China is the second biggest source of this gemstone and it has had an influence on Chinese cuisines. Chinese cuisine can be very hot and spicy or it can be very plain and simple. Chinese food varies greatly from region to region, reflecting the country's ethnic and cultural diversity.

In the long history of Chinese cooking, some of their cooking methods have become quite extensively used. These techniques include Stir frying, Deep frying, Steaming and Boiling. These well known cooking techniques are passed down through generations, from grandmother to granddaughter, both at home and abroad.

Being one of the main sources for February’s birth stone, the amethyst, this week we are focusing on the fashion and trends that are currently coming out of Brazil.

Fashion in Brazil is often linked to provocative styling and minimalistic beach-wear, many of us conjuring up thoughts of Carnivale costumes and string bikinis. Recently, however, Brazil has been gaining recognition from the fashion industry. January 2010 brought two major fashion events to Brazil, Rio Fashion Week in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil Fashion week in Sao Paulo. Designers all from all over the world descended on these South American hot spots for two weeks of couture and sophistication.

Rio Fashion Week

A fun color palette of shades of oranges, blues, creams and grays, mixed with interesting textures composed the innovative and fashion forward collection of Melk Z-Da.

In contrast to the softer colors of Melk Z-Da is Cantao’s 2010 Fall/Winter collection, full of bright colors and bold prints.

Giulia Borges’ collection was a dream in black and white.

Brazil (Sao Paulo) Fashion Week

Like Cantao, Alexandre Herchcovitch picks up on the rising trend of gyspy-esque styling, referred to as “Gypset”.

The outdoor runway was the perfect showcase for Maria Bonita’s breezy collection.

Amethyst – Brazilian Food

While researching the metaphysical properties of Amethyst, (I was born February 14th), I came upon many helpful websites, which expanded my knowledge of this beautiful and charming birthstone, as well as my culinary knowledge of Brazilian cuisine. Remember, Amethyst comes mostly from Brazil, where everyone loves to dance, drink, and especially eat.

Brazilian cuisine includes an eclectic variety of foods from a many countries, Germany, Middle East, Africa and even Japan. Alligator meat, called picadinho de jacaré, is a regional favorite and apparently scrumptious and delightful. Pine nuts called pinhão are often mixed with different traditional foods prepared from the locals of southern Brazil and those dishes take on a completely new identity when mixed in. The Portuguese and Indians brought their own essence to the Brazilian recipes. And when the Africans came along, they added some more unique flavors to the exotic dishes.

New generations of modern Brazilian chefs are adding new techniques into their kitchens, everyday. For example, some add tropical fruits to their dishes, such as mango, coconut milk, and papaya. Mmm!

By the way, Amethyst in Greek means “without alcohol.” So some of its metaphysical properties will only be awakened when we avoid alcohol during the month of February. Good luck, with that.

Reflecting on 2009, I think one of the most memorable time was when I created my shop on etsy: my brainstorming with my sister to find a name for the shop and great support I received from my friend Tulay. We enjoyed so much working together on orders of tags and creating blank greeting cards. It was about 10 months ago, when I opened my shop, now looking back, I am glad I did it! It's been quite a fun journey even though I often have to juggle several different priorities at the same time. It's been very rewarding at a personal level.

In August 2009, RI Handmade coordinated its first art show. I was there to represent my newly established catering business. We held the event in East Greenwich, Rhode Island on a beautiful Sunday at Perle Nail Salon. It was an awesome experience for me. Before the event, I was unsure if I had done enough networking or if enough people even knew about it. So, a few days before the event, I went door to door, handing out flyers to local East Greenwich businesses. I handed out a simple, elegant flyer of the event and crossed my fingers. Fortunately, that Sunday was a beautiful, sunny day and people from all over showed up. All enjoyed the art show and numerous people tasted my Mediterranean cuisine for the first time. A number of them would later become regular clients of mine. I learned so much about networking and being out there for public. I learned a valuable lesson; if I want to be successful in my catering business, I have to be assertive in marketing. In 2010, more art shows are sure to be put together by RI Handmade. Look forward to them!
